Sorry this didn’t help. I see compatibility mode on all documents and many of them can’t be opened in other programmes The situation has got quite complicated and I think I need to work through it to see what develops? Your mixed environment of versions will result in documents being placed in “compatibility” mode when they are edited with Word and then opened for additional editing on a Word system.
Originally, “compatibility mode” only occurred when opening binary formatted doc documents on a systems setup for the XML format docx , in other words, documents of the Word 97 – format being opened on machines running Word – However, XML code changes that were required in Office and later versions, introduced another form of compatibility mode, a compatibility between the various versions of XML.
Where I have found compatibility mode to be a problem is in editing complex documents The alignment of these objects shift a few pixels and in the case of table columns, this shifting leads to a stair stepping effect on all edited rows.
My recommendation to our customers is to always convert the document out of compatibility mode before editing. Renaming the Normal template should create a new one which is not in Compatibility mode. Note that if some older versions of the file these may have names such as PreNormal, NormalPre or Normal1 are present, you have to delete those before restarting Word.
You should also check that the executable file for winword. Locate winword. Choose the option to try recommended settings and follow all the steps, up to and including testing the settings. If you rename the normal template on a machine not delete with Word closed and then reopen Word, a new normal template, not in compatibility mode, will be formed.
How to Find the Normal Template. If your old normal template has customizations like styles, formatted autocorrect, autotext, macros, keyboard shortcuts, write back for how to preserve those. You do not want to be using a normal template in Word or vice-versa. Do not copy it from one version to a different one. Note that ‘Compatibility Mode’ is not an error condition, it is simply an indcation that the document was formatted in an earlier version or Word.
